Google has quietly been testing a feature allowing users to change their primary Gmail address, a capability previously reserved for those with custom domains. The initial announcement surfaced in Hindi late last year, leaving many wondering about wider availability.
The wait appears to be nearing an end. Google has now officially published English-language instructions for the process, signaling a broader rollout is underway. However, access remains limited, and many users are still unable to see the option within their account settings.
The change is accessed through your Google Account settings at myaccount.google.com/google-account-email. Navigate to Personal Info, then Google Account Email, and finally, Change Google Account Email to input your desired new address.
While a welcome change, the update isn’t without caveats. Your old email address won’t disappear entirely; it will function as an alias, ensuring continued delivery of messages and maintaining access to existing services like Calendar events.
This approach prevents disruption and safeguards against lost contacts, while also preventing anyone else from claiming your former address. You can still use the old address to log into associated accounts, and all your data remains accessible regardless of the login method.
However, the ability to change your address isn’t unlimited. Google restricts changes to once per year, with a lifetime limit of three alterations. This prevents constant switching and maintains account stability.
Chromebook and Chrome Remote Desktop users will need to remove and re-add their accounts after the change. Issues may also arise with “Sign in With Google” on third-party sites, requiring potential troubleshooting.
